Recycling is more commonly use as a catch all term that encompasses Reduction, Reclamation, Reuse and Recycling. Recycling itself refers to the process of reusing or reengineering all or part of an item to become an object or component of an item that is used again in the same or different form. Put more simply, “if you can reuse it, don’t waste it”.
Why should we bother?
Be it Post Consumer or Post Industrial Waste the cost of reengineering its reuse is often significantly cheaper than its remanufacture from its original raw material source.
But barriers to effective recycling are many these include, apathy, perception of low returns relative to the effort, lack of coordination and education. Or more crudely what’s in it for me?
How about, lower costs, fewer legislative penalties, cleaner air, cleaner water, fewer environmental disasters, and a sustainable environment with a lasting future. In exchange for a few minutes of daily sorting, some thought about what you are consuming and the reuse of things that cost you money to replace.
Recycling is an amazing resource, limited only by our attitude and our imagination.
